Built-in kamado islands
You can put a kamado in an outdoor kitchen, but not the way you'd drop in a gas grill. It needs air at the bottom, room for the ash drawer, and walls that won't burn.
The rules every source repeated
- No wood around it. RTA Outdoor Living, an outdoor-kitchen company, says to steer away from wood and use brick, stone, cinderblock or concrete.
- It can't be fully enclosed. The vents sit at the base, and the ash drawer slides out the bottom. RTA's point is that you can get a built-in look, but you can't truly seal a Kamado Joe into a box.
- The Egg sits on a metal nest. Big Green Egg says its low table nest is meant for an Egg that is housed inside a table, island or other surround, so the air gap under it stays open.
- Check the maker's clearance numbers. BBQGuys' island guide says the same thing in general terms: if anything that burns is inside the grill's clearance zone, don't build the grill straight into the island. For a kamado, ask the maker.
Measure these before you pour anything
- Grill height with its feet or nest on. RTA says the Classic needs three feet and the Big Joe needs four.
- Counter height against the grill. Kamados are tall, so the cooking grid has to end up at a height you can reach, which usually means the body sits lower than the counter.
- Room to open the lid all the way. One store reviewer doubts a rotisserie fits inside a tall sleeve. That's one person's guess, so check yours.
- Space to pull the ash drawer and clean it.
Sleeves and inserts
A sleeve is a metal box that goes in the cutout and holds the grill. One example is BBQGuys' own universal kamado sleeve with a drawer, listed at $699.99 on Nov 4, 2026. That store's fit list includes the Kamado Joe Classic and the Large and XL Big Green Egg, and says the Primo Oval XL and Large are too wide. It adds that the Classic 3 only fits with its shelves taken off.
That is a single store's list and we haven't matched it to the maker, so we aren't printing the cutout measurements. Get them from the sleeve maker and from your grill's manual.
What we don't know
We haven't found an official clearance-to-combustibles number for any kamado, and we won't make one up. Local building rules can add their own limits. Ask the maker, and ask whoever pulls your permit.
